Dear Unsent Letters Writer - 2020
Mar. 8th, 2020 10:22 pmHi there, Unsent Letters writer! Thank you for sharing my fandoms and creating for me. <3
I am academicgangster on Tumblr, and simplecoffee on ao3.
So, the thing I love most in fanfic is taking canon character dynamics and just...making them More. Taking them further, exploring their natural progression, in either a gen or a shippy way. I've mentioned the character dynamics and ships I love under each fandom, along with some rambly thoughts and prompts - speaking of which, please feel free to please feel free to pick, choose, mix, match, play with any, all or even none of said prompts, if that's where the muse takes you. <3
I also love hurt/comfort with all my soul, so please feel free to write as much of it as your muse desires. 💛
I am a-okay with any kind of exploration of character dynamics - h/c, casefic, fluff fic, angst, missing scenes, outsider POV, outsider POV contrasted with canon characters' POV, getting together fic, you name it I love it. I'm also very much okay with or without smut - I like it, but please don't feel pressured to include it or not to include it. If you do feel inclined toward the lovin', I have a preference for a Mature rating over an Explicit rating, but I will likely enjoy whatever rating speaks to you. :D
General likes:
• Hurt/comfort of all stripes - sickfic, injuries, emotional h/c, all of it. (This is my favourite thing in all of fandom. Like, I absolutely live for it. ^^')
• Character studies, exploration of canon character dynamics, fallout of canon trauma
• PTSD, illness messing with a character's grip on reality, combat/mission injuries, scars, old injuries acting up, touch starvation, sensory deprivation / sensory overload, characters not believing they deserve comfort or being surprised to receive comfort, selective mutism, hurting characters choking up at moments when they really need to speak (eg. leader unable to tell their worried team they're fine, submissive unable to safeword), stoic characters breaking down when faced with comfort, subdrop, characters bonding over trauma, characters so used to going through hell alone that they can't wrap their heads around someone wanting to help
• carrying, cuddling, characters wrapping ill/injured characters in soft blankets/clothes/their own jackets (especially jackets that are too big for them!), sweater paws, keeping characters warm, aftercare, forehead kisses, hands and touch
• Earned trust and casual intimacy (characters who know each other well or get to know each other well, clothes sharing, characters only allowing touch from people they trust, etc)
• Pain, bittersweetness, sadness, exploring the darker side and implications of canon is great, but I really need some happiness/comfort and hope along with it!
Sexual likes:
D/s overtones. Femdom. Service subs. Subs With Issues. Praise kink (even without d/s). Hands, fingers, touch; touch starvation. Finger-sucking. Hair petting/brushing. Aftercare. Subdrop and recovery. Tenderness, especially if the person receiving it isn't expecting it, isn't used to it, and it breaks them just a little.
Marking - hickeys/bruising/bite marks; hiding the bruises under clothing. Heavy petting. Scar worship. Suit/uniform kink. Partners reverently undressing each other. Wrists bound or held down. Honour bondage. Careful sex / making out when one partner is hurt or ill and feverish (fever sex is, uh, a Thing of mine). Gentleness, affection, emphasis on touch and texture/physical sensation (clothing porn is so very welcome!). Or rough, desperate, life-affirming sex/making out.
(In certain fandoms, I like the sex rougher, and have some thoughts involving non- or dubcon. There are prompts for those scenarios under those fandoms.)
General DNWs:
• Mundane/depowered/setting change AUs
• Bleak, hopeless endings (as long as there's hope, bittersweet endings are more than fine!)
• Unrequested crossovers and fusions
• Any mention of Mission Impossible 2 canon
• also for Mission: Impossible, a journal by Ethan. (other formats from his POV are A+, as are all formats from the other characters' POV - I just don't think Ethan is the kind to journal, at least in writing! He might draw, lol, but that's another story. Artsy kind of guy, Ethan.)
• Death of requested characters (even if they died in canon. Alan Hunley Is Alive That's My Story And I'm Sticking To It. The exception: Men in Black, where yes please, it is a-okay to deal with Lauranna's death and its fallout.)
• Non-canonical character death
• Terminal illness
• Permanent injury (the exception: yes please, it is super okay to deal with Jack Ryan's canonical past injury in The Hunt for Red October, and its continued ramifications in his present and future.)
• Gastrointestinal illness (nausea/vomiting is okay but not as a result of GI illness)
• Pregnancy (exception: mentions of Lauranna's canonical pregnancy with Laura in Men in Black are okay, but I'd still rather pregnancy not be the focus of the fic), menstruation
• Infidelity (for Red October, I would prefer that Jack and Cathy were never married, separated amiably and share custody of Sally)
Sexual DNWs:
• Noncon or dubcon
• humiliation as a kink
• pain play
• anal, dirty talk, spanking, ageplay, scat, watersports, rimming, emeto, A/B/O, d/s-verse, mommy/daddy kink
And now for some prompts!
The Hunt for Red October (1990)
Jack/Ramius, Jack/Mancuso, Ramius/Mancuso, Jack/Ramius/Mancuso
(Books and Articles, Journals and Diaries, Letters and E-mails)
Character dynamic notes: I love Jack in the submissive role to Ramius and/or Mancuso's dom, and I can see Ramius submitting to Mancuso. That said, I am super happy with or without the d/s in this fandom. <3
I love this version of Jack Ryan so much! I love that he's a strategic expert and knows which hunches to play, but he's not a field agent and knows exactly Fuck All about field operations! I also love his backstory, his lingering PTSD and likely chronic pain from the spinal injury that ended his career as a Marine, and how he ploughs on regardless of how Very Much He Does Not Want To Be Ploughing On.
I also love his instinctive mutual connection with Ramius - how they get each other without having to say much, if at all; how they both quote literature and poetry at the drop of a hat - and his initially rough but soon respectful dynamic with Mancuso: how Mancuso makes sure Jack's okay, warm and dry, and how he comes around to liking him when he realizes he was right. I also love the Ramius-Mancuso dynamic (Ramius in his dress uniform, presenting the Red October to Mancuso in his officer-on-duty fatigues! So Many Feelings), and the dynamic among all three of them, and I would super love Ramius/Mancuso/Jack. <3
Prompts!
- I'd love to see an article or an excerpt from a book that Jack wrote about Ramius, and/or one that he wrote about Mancuso. Either way, he's clearly in love with the subject - perhaps obliviously, or perhaps he's in a relationship with the subject and just can't talk about it in the article/book. (I'm envisioning it like, as dramatic as this post, for the record)
- Alternatively, this book extract or article coming to light years later when Jack is the President and Ramius and/or Mancuso is/are his husband/s, and the internet losing their entire minds over how head over heels President Ryan already was for his husband(s) way back around like, 1986-1996.
- Jack and/or Ramius writing to Mancuso while he's away aboard the Dallas, and Mancuso writing back. Maybe before they get together, maybe after, maybe both; hell, maybe that's how they fall in love in the first place.
- Ramius keeping a diary of his experiences in the New World, including his relationship with Jack and/or Mancuso.
- Jack or Mancuso stuck somewhere while sick or hurt, in unfamiliar surroundings (maybe Jack got hurt on another field mission he really shouldn't have been on, or fell ill on a book tour or exerted himself too much and is stuck in a hotel room with his back acting up, or Mancuso got injured or fell ill aboard the Dallas and had to be evacuated to an unfamiliar hospital), writing notes or letters to the object(s, could be the other of the two, could be Ramius) of their pining, all while possibly not entirely lucid. Maybe they read them back later and have some revelations about their feelings, maybe they eventually decide to send them after all, or maybe the intended recipient gets to read them years later instead, when they're happily together.
Mission: Impossible (Movies)
Ethan/Hunley, Ethan/Luther
(it wasn't nominated, but I'm never opposed to Ethan/Luther/Hunley!)
(Journals and Diaries, Letters and E-mails, Texts and Social Media)
Character dynamic notes: I love Ethan in the submissive role to either Luther or Hunley, being gently held down and loved on. (He deals with enough pain in his day job.)
I'd love established relationships or get-together fic, either way is more than fine! 💛
For Ethan/Hunley, their dynamic is so oddly delightful! Hunley spent most of Rogue Nation trying to chase Ethan down, but by the airport scene in Fallout he's clearly at least a little bit in love with him, and it's adorable. They're so different but so complementary! Hunley's so vocal and Ethan so quiet, but equally intense! Ethan's such a ray of sunshine that he apparently converted Hunley from a cynic to an idealist by deciding to trust him! Hunley heaps praise and reassurance on Ethan, while Ethan looks as though he's in physical pain from being told he's worth believing in! Ethan calls Hunley 'sir' and it somehow means all the things! And as always, Ethan is canonically pretty damn touch-starved and might tear up on receiving unexpected physical affection, especially if he's otherwise hurting and overwhelmed. There is so much unsaid between these two characters, so much unexplored.
For Ethan/Luther...god, they've known each other so long and loved each other so long. There's definitely an element of unspoken devotion there, how Luther calls Ethan 'baby', how he's the only person Ethan trusts to see him vulnerable, how devastated they each look when the other nearly dies in Fallout, how they each seem not to value their own life as much as the other does. There's a long-term-mutual-pining vibe about the two of them, a kind of feeling that each of them thinks they're not good enough for the other, that maybe each of them believes their love is unrequited. tl;dr Please Help These Beautiful Idiots.
Prompts!
- Early on in their acquaintance, between MI: 1 and M:I III, Luther writes to Ethan or leaves him notes when he's gravely injured or ill after a mission, and he's not allowed in to see him.
- Ethan writes to Luther or Hunley from various locations and various aliases, while he's deep cover - sometimes while he's sick or hurt. (For Luther, maybe this is during Ethan's year undercover at the beginning of Rogue Nation; for Hunley, maybe pre- or post-Fallout.)
- Hunley writes love letters or even poetry to Ethan, before he can gather the courage to tell him about his feelings. Maybe he sends them anonymously and Ethan is flattered and bewildered and wow-I-am-not-worthy. Maybe he never does send them, but hands one to the team in Fallout with what he thinks is his dying breath, and Ethan is given them after the film, when he himself is badly injured and he thinks Hunley is dead or dying. (Little does he know that Hunley is alive, if barely, and will recover and they will kiss.)
- Ethan replies to worried texts from Hunley and/or Luther when he gets out of hospital after an illness or injury.
- Ethan replies to worried texts from Hunley and/or Luther when he's disappeared off-grid for a few days because he hasn't been feeling well.
- Ethan replies to worried texts from Hunley and/or Luther in one of the above scenarios, and one or both of them show up at his place to take care of him.
- Luther or Hunley keeps a journal, not realizing quite how large a part Ethan's come to play in said journal until they've known him for quite a while.
Mission: Impossible (Movies)
Ethan/Max, Ethan & Max
Journals and Diaries, Letters and E-mails)
Character dynamic notes: HELLO I HAVE ALL THE FEMDOM FEELINGS ON THE ENTIRE PLANET. These two were flirting so hard from the very moment they met, Max was so very domme and Ethan so very subby and eager, and it was fully mutual and consensual - they may be rivals in an uneasy allyship, but they like and respect each other so damn much; they both play completely fair at all times, clearly enjoy their banter, and look like they'd be all over each other should circumstances permit. So my prompt here is...let circumstances permit.
There's a sort of deep affection between these two that goes beyond their fiery sexual tension. When Max and Ethan met, Ethan was at his shakiest and most vulnerable; he'd just lost his whole found family in one night, and been framed for their deaths when he tried to call for help. He put up a damn good front for Max - he had to, playing the high-stakes cloak-and-dagger spy game he was forced to play - but it's not unreasonable to figure she might realize there's something else beneath the surface. Not unreasonable to figure an experienced domme could tell what he needs, and that she might want to give.
Max is a whole lot taller than Ethan as well as being much older, which I find all kinds of lovely; she also lives a super luxurious high-society life. I imagine she also has fine taste in clothes and jewellery and would take them off a partner with some attention, and appreciate the same being done for her, especially at her direction. Ethan is the kind to be similarly attuned to detail, and (especially when as young as he is around the time of MI:1) he is also the kind to be breathlessly eager to please and to be Good. He's also shaken up and miserably touch-starved, and might tear up on receiving unexpected physical affection, so make of that what you will.
Prompts!
- Max keeps a journal of all her subs. Because, like. Of course she does, right? The little Company man has a page in it...or a few. Even if she'll never know his name. She has plenty of names for him, after all.
- Max and Ethan have to collaborate with each other for a mission. They write to each other noir style, inscrutable code words/phrases and all, and perhaps allude to their other, more sensual 'collaborations' in equally veiled terms.
- Max writes to an IMF contact to have Ethan exfiltrated from a mission that went wrong. (He went to her for help, gravely injured or ill, and she's keeping him safe and ensuring he's getting adequate medical attention until the IMF can get him home safely.)
- One of Ethan's identities gets in some kind of trouble, and he has to lie low for a bit in a country/area where Max has a stronghold. Max takes him in for a week or two, which they proceed to spend exceedingly well. One or both of them takes to leaving sexy or affectionate notes while their counterpart is asleep.
Men in Black (Movies)
Kay/Lauranna, Kay & Laura
Journals and Diaries, Letters and E-mails)
Character dynamic notes: god, I love Kay/Lauranna as an achingly soft, possibly slow-built bodyguard/protectee relationship, and I love the idea of Kay and Laura exchanging letters once Laura knows that he's her dad.
Prompts:
- Before Lauranna ever has to seek sanctuary from Serleena, she's visited Earth for galactic peace talks and the like. Kay is her bodyguard when she's on Earth, but he doesn't get to see her for extended periods when she's on other planets. They get encrypted messages to each other, somehow.
- Kay asks Laura about life on Zartha; Laura asks Kay about her mom. They're both generally reticent people, but they slowly open up and bond as father and daughter.
- Laura keeps a journal or diary while learning Zarthan culture, and sometimes shares pages with Kay for a laugh.
- Kay and Laura write to each other from time to time, and notice some little traits they share. Kay notices traits that Laura inherited from Lauranna, too.
